Alpine County

Alpine County is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park.   There are 743 square miles in Alpine County and the county seat is Markleeville. Parts of the Eldorado, Stanislaus, and Toiyabe National Forests cover a large portion of the county. The major highways in the county are State Route’s 4, 88, and 89. The county is geographically divided by the Sierra Nevadamountains and Highway 4 is closed during the winter months. Alpine County has the smallest population of any county in the State of California.

The eastern side of the county, along the Highway 4 corridor, is home to the Bear Valley Ski Resort. Ambulance service into this area of the county is provided, in a non-exclusive operating area, by Ebbetts Pass Fire District. Patients who are ill or injured are primarily transported to Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Andreas.   Air ambulance service is provided by PHI Air Medical, CalStar, and REACH.

The western side of the county, along the Highway 88 corridor, is home to the Kirkwood Ski Resort.   Patients who are ill or injured are primarily transported to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, or Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville, Nevada.   Ambulance service to this area of the county is provided, in a non exclusive operating area, by Lake Valley Fire Department.
